ARRIVALS

ARRIVING AT THE AIRPORT

When you arrive in the UK, the UK Border Force officers at the airport will ask you to show your passport. All Student visas are now stored electronically and you may be asked to provide the officer with a Share Code. This is so that you can evidence that you understand how to access your visa information.

PASSING THROUGH BORDER CONTROL

A Border Force officer will check your passport and may ask to see your tickets/ boarding card. So make sure you have everything you need in your hand luggage (refer to the list on page 13). They may ask you some questions, such as why you are coming to the UK to study or what your future plans are. Make sure you have hard copies of all your important documents and do not rely on digital versions. Once you have cleared immigration, you can collect your baggage.

CUSTOMS AND BAGGAGE CHECKS

After collecting your baggage, you must walk through the customs area to leave the airport. • If you have nothing to declare, you can pass through the green channel. • If you have goods to declare, you must pass through the red channel. Customs officers can ask to inspect your baggage. If they make this request,

you must co-operate. You can read more on UK customs at www.gov.uk/government/publications/travelling-to-the-uk

15

PASSPORT TO HARTPURY 2026

Once you have left the customs area you are free to find your driver (if you are being collected) and start your journey to Hartpury. If your flight is cancelled, delayed or you are not on your flight, you must telephone Andy Cars (Hartpury’s recommended taxi service) on 0044 1452 523000 . WELCOME TO THE UK!

“Arriving in the UK was very smooth for me personally and everything was fairly organised so transitioning

“Arriving in the UK to start my journey as an international student was very exciting. Flying to the UK was my f i rst time f l ying abroad alone, the border control process was smooth and straightforward. I found Hartpury’s international support guide very helpful, as it provided clear information on what to expect upon arrival and what steps to take.” Ruoxi

through arrivals, immigration and grabbing luggage was very straightforward. Transport can be organised in advance through Hartpury and the communication is always reassuring.” Dhruvpal

Can I use an ePassport gate? As it will be your first time entering the UK on your Student visa, we recommend you do not use an ePassport gate and instead go to an officer at an immigration desk.

Words of wisdom from our international students

“Be prepared to learn quickly how British people greet each other in passing, for example “Hi, how are you?” and ”I’m good, thanks!” Get comfortable with these phrases so you do not end up in a situation where you are asking how the other person is after they’ve walked past you!” Skai “In your residential block, knock on people’s doors and introduce yourself. It is always nice to know you are not alone and that you are able to speak to your neighbour if you need anything.” Emily

“There is plenty to see and do in Gloucestershire, including Gloucester Quays, the Cotswolds, Cheltenham, and Forest of Dean. I also enjoy spending time on campus by the lake.” Dhruvpal

17

PASSPORT TO HARTPURY 2026

“Most books required for our courses are available to borrow for long periods from the library, or can be downloaded in eBook form. You can even buy them second hand to save money.” Eliza “The Students' Union has plenty of clubs, societies and activities for you to choose from. To join, you do not need any previous experience and you will get to know a lot of people with similar interests. The Students' Union can even help you to create a new club.” Martyna

Getting organised Your to-do list for your first week will look something like this:

Register with a doctor Set up your phone and internet connections Open a UK bank account Learn how to get around Get used to planning your own meals

21

PASSPORT TO HARTPURY 2026

UK bank account You may need to open a UK or digital bank account to pay your rent and bills and transfer money from overseas. If you decide to work part-time during your studies, it is likely that your employer will pay your wages into your bank account. Tips for opening a bank account Before deciding which bank you want to use, you should compare services offered and which fees and benefits they include.

Set up your phone If you decide to get a UK mobile number, you will have two options: pay-as-you-go SIM card or take a contract. There are several providers in the UK; we do recommend EE as we have a mast on site. Pay-as-you-go phone Purchase a phone and minutes/text/data bundle, which you can top up as needed with vouchers, online or in-store at the provider. If you are using your phone purely for communication in the UK, this may be the most cost effective option for you. Contract phone This option will require you to have a UK bank account in order to make regular monthly payments towards your chosen package. Shop around for the best deals. If you require instant data and calling when you arrive, you can purchase SIM cards or eSIMs for immediate connectivity upon arrival. You can find options to purchase SIMs or eSIMs at the airport arrivals terminals in Kiosks, vending machines, and retailers (eg. WH Smith). While convenient for instant data and calling, airport SIMs are typically more expensive than those bought in city stores. Internet access All students on campus have free access to the Hartpury network (Eduroam), which allows fast wireless internet access in all student bedrooms and various locations around campus. To connect, simply click on the Eduroam Wi-Fi and enter your Hartpury email and password. If you are staying in campus accommodation, a wired network port is also provided in each bedroom to connect. The required network cable (ethernet cable) can be purchased from Student Services for £5 or you can bring your own.

The Save the Student website has UK bank account information for

international students. Scan here to find more

When you decide which bank to open an account with, contact Hartpury’s

International team and request a letter to submit to the bank. This letter confirms your address and course details and can only be issued once you are fully enrolled. HSBC, a UK bank provider, will be on campus during International Orientation to help you open a UK bank account. Just bring your mobile and passport. You will need to be over 18 years old to use this service.

“When I first got here, I had never had a bank account before, so I went to HSBC UK, and they created a bank account for me with a savings account so that I could put money away every month to save.” Emily

Well known food retailers include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. You will also find independent food shops in Gloucester selling ingredients from all over the world.

"There's so much to see and do at Gloucester Quays. There’s a shopping centre full of famous brands and amazing places to eat. Over the Christmas holidays, you can go ice skating with your friends. It is such a nice day out in Gloucester.” Emily

Living in a new country is a great opportunity to expand your horizons. Going further Fancy something completely different? These cities are all easily accessible from the UK.

Working while you study Many of our international students choose to work part-time while they are at Hartpury. There are lots of good reasons to consider taking a part-time job: Make extra money to spend on social, cultural and travel activities Gain skills to impress your future employers Get work experience in your chosen area of interest Challenge yourself to do something new Make new friends and contacts outside your course Some jobs will not even require you to leave campus. Many students take roles as student ambassadors, or work at the Equine Yard or in Legends Bar. There are lots of jobs available off campus too, in areas such as retail and hospitality.

Check out your Student Union to find opportunities www.hartpurysu.co.uk/part-time-jobs

Need to know – working in the UK On a Student visa, university students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time. College students can work up to 10 hours per week during term time. Keeping you safe We take your safety and wellbeing seriously and prioritise it at all times. The UK is a multicultural society; people from all over the world come to live, study and work here. Most towns and cities have a diverse mix of cultures and places of worship. Gloucester has been welcoming people from all over the world for decades.

On campus security A barrier system monitors all vehicles entering the campus. Card controlled entry on all learning spaces ensures that only those with student cards may enter. Our accommodation halls also operate with card-controlled entry. Access is only granted to students who live within the hall and a key will be provided for your room. Card-controlled entry is one of the tools we use to help keep our students safe. You must use your Student ID card each time you enter and exit your accommodation hall.
