INNOVATIVE work based programme.

Only one of its kind in the UK

Diploma in Professional Studies Veterinary Nursing

This highly innovative training programme is ideal for employed individuals wanting to qualify as a veterinary nurse while working in practice. The two-year programme consists of four, 12-week semesters where student veterinary nurses will spend one day per week on the Hartpury campus for a total of 48 days, supported by online learning and benefitting from a stimulating training environment, excellent academic teaching and first-class support. Students complete the Nursing Progress Log during their studies as evidence for the RCVS Day One Competences, Skills, and Professional Behaviours for Veterinary Nurses. Successful completion of the Level 5 Higher Education qualification will give eligibility to enter the RCVS Veterinary Nursing Register and allow you to legally practice as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in the UK.

SHORT COURSE

Clinical Coach training Our programme, designed to provide clinical coach training to Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Nurses, has been developed to help participants to develop their coaching skills in the workplace. We offer the online training to anyone wishing to train as a Clinical Coach. It is not necessary to have a Hartpury University student working with you to participate.

QUALIFY as a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Registered Veterinary Nurse and specialise in companion-animal or equine nursing via our industry-led undergraduate programmes.

BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing This degree provides a fantastic opportunity for you to qualify as a Veterinary Nurse, whilst advancing your own and the industry’s knowledge through research and clinical coaching. You’ll advance your knowledge of an industry relevant area that interests you through live research and statistical analysis. On successful completion of your final year, you’ll be eligible to join the RCVS Veterinary Nursing Registrar and begin practicing as a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse. Many of our veterinary nursing students are offered graduate roles with their placement providers when they graduate.

BSc (Hons) Equine Veterinary Nursing

You’ll benefit from outstanding facilities, including a livery yard that’s home to over 230 horses, international equine events each year and a commercial Equine Therapy Centre on site. In your first year, you’ll develop knowledge and skills in essential areas including clinical anatomy, husbandry, pharmacy management and patient care. You’ll complete work experience in a veterinary practice, before returning to Hartpury to develop your skills in diagnostics and surgical and anaesthesia practice. In your final year, you’ll coach student veterinary nurses and pursue your research interests. You may have the opportunity to publish research with lecturers and present at industry conferences.

OPPORTUNITY Calling all Veterinary Nursing Training Practices...

Could you offer a Hartpury student small animal or equine veterinary nursing experience in your practice? With industrial placements giving a rare and valuable insight which greatly improves the career prospects of graduates, Hartpury is looking to expand its placement opportunities for Veterinary Nursing students across the UK. We are accepting applications from new or existing Veterinary Nursing Training Practices. There is currently no approval or reapproval fee.

PRACTICE PARTNERSHIPS FOR PLACEMENTS

Duration / Hours Students must complete 1,800 hours by working a full-time (minimum 37 hour) week. There is an available period of 60 weeks (July - September) to do this. Students can undertake supervised out-of-hours or on-call work (when they are suitably experienced and comfortable to do so) but the time cannot be counted towards their training. During this placement, students are entitled to up 20 days leave plus bank holidays. Support and Training Students will be required to complete the Nursing Progress Log (NPL) in full during their time on placement. They will need to be allocated a trained Clinical Coach to support them, who will devote a minimum of three hours per week to training them. They will be allocated a university based Clinical Tutor to monitor their NPL and visit the practice to carry out a practice facilities check and NPL audit. This is in line with RCVS Training Practice requirements. Accommodation Whilst some students will be grateful for the offer of practice accommodation (as they may not be able to live at home due to location), the provision of accommodation is completely at the practices’ discretion and is by no means mandatory.

Payment Students completing full-time placements of 1,800 hours should not extend beyond 52 weeks, for the Practice to be exempt from HMRC National MinimumWage (NMW) Legislation. Prior Learning Prior to the commencement of their placement the students will have undertaken the following modules: • Clinical Anatomy and Physiology for Veterinary Nurses • Animal Husbandry for Veterinary Nurses • Professional Veterinary Nursing Practice • Patient Care 1 for Veterinary Nurses • Placement Preparation for Veterinary Nurses • Pharmacy Management. These modules provide students with a broad knowledge base from which to start their placement. These will have been simulated experiences; therefore, you will still be required to demonstrate skills in the usual way before recording them on the NPL.

JULY

The placement normally starts in early July, at the end of the students’ first year of university.

Did you know? Upon completion of their studies and registration to the RCVS, a lot of our students return to their placement practice for their first job after graduation.
