Meet your SU Your Students’ Union is run by students for students. Meet your team for 2019/20. Officers are elected each year, by you the students. Alice Burtonshaw | SU President I joined Hartpury to do my A-levels and now I’m studying a BA (Hons) Sport Business Management degree. As SU President, I’ll be representing the views of the Hartpury students – that means you! My goal is to ensure each and every student has the best experience they could wish for, whilst creating strong foundations for a successful future. Georgie Grimes and Jenny Howorth | SU Vice-Presidents We’re your joint SU Vice-Presidents. We’re both college students about to start our second year of the Uniformed Public Services course. Our focus is on equality and diversity and making sure that everyone feels they have a place here – regardless of gender, race, sexuality, disability or religion. We’re keen to get working on more social events and volunteering and fundraising opportunities. Alice Doyle | Clubs and Societies Officer I’m the Clubs and Societies Officer and I’m starting my second year on BSc (Hons) Human-Animal Interaction. I believe the Students’ Union is an integral part of Hartpury life, so I’m going to make sure you have a great social life and fun whilst studying. I support our current societies, clubs and groups and am always keen to start more so get in touch with your ideas! The Freshers’ Fair in your first week is the ideal place to find a club or society to get involved in. Hazel Facey | Education Officer I’m going into my second year of the BSc (Hons) Human-Animal Interaction with Psychology degree. I adore animals and as a member of our Green Leaders Society, I’m passionate about creating positive change on campus. My role as Education Officer is to represent your voice, gather your feedback and make sure you have access to additional educational and extra- curricular opportunities. I want your Hartpury experience to be the best it can be!

9

Your Students’ Union is here for you Empowering you to excel by providing representation, guidance and opportunities. Representation Your course will have two student representatives. They’ll gather your feedback on everything about your Hartpury story. Whether it’s your teaching and learning experience, the size of classes, quality of equipment, recycling on campus, transport, facilities or food – they want to hear your views. If you’re interested in becoming your course rep, please let Hazel (your Education Officer) know. Guidance We know that settling into a new place with new people can be daunting. So we’re on hand to help you with that. We can help you find your way to the library, join new clubs and activities, or even find the support and assistance you might need. Come and have a chat with us. Opportunities We want you to have the best time here and a big part of that is your leisure time. We provide plenty of clubs and societies for you to join (and even help run, if you like). If we don’t have one that you would like to see, have a chat with Alice Doyle (your Clubs and Societies Officer). She would love to help you set it up. For volunteering opportunities, speak to Jenny and Georgie (your Vice-Presidents) and gain new skills that will pay off in the workplace. There’s heaps going on in Gloucestershire too.

With lots of animals on campus you’ll have plenty of opportunities to interact with them. We have two registered therapy dogs, Ralph and Bailey, who you could walk.

10

Your Chill Out Zone The Chill Out Zone is in the Cavern underneath Hartpury House (down the steps on the left of the Hartpury House main entrance). This provides a quieter option for you to meet new people, watch a movie or TV, listen to music or read a book or magazine. We understand that Freshers’ Week can be a bit lively and that partying isn’t for everyone. The Chill Out Zone gives you an alternative hang-out option. Our top tips Our Students’ Union have put together these 10 top tips to help you settle in to uni life. 1. Bring lots of pictures and photographs of your friends and family to decorate your room. Bring some spare frames for new pictures too! 2. Don’t buy expensive kitchen supplies – you’ll be lucky to leave with a spoon by the end of the year. 3. Get involved – there’s a lot happening on campus during the week. Give everything a try, you might even find a new hobby that you love. 4. Make the most of Legends social hub and uni study lounge – it’s your space to mix, mingle and relax. 5. Get to know your Students’ Union – we’re here to help you and make sure you’re having the best time. We’ll also help you get your Totum card for heaps of student discounts. 6. Get a bus timetable! As beautiful as it is, you might want to get off campus and explore the local area. 7. Don’t blow your student loan in one go – it might look like a lot of money but it has to last until January. 8. Get a part-time job – you’ll have a free day with no lectures each week to use. If you already work at a big chain, ask if you can transfer to Gloucester or Cheltenham. 9. If your phone contract is soon up for renewal, think about switching to EE or BT. These two networks have the best coverage on campus. 10. If you're bringing a smart TV you'll need to bring an Ethernet cable to connect to the network.
