Data is transforming agriculture and has become the source of truth for performance, productivity, and sustainability measures on-farm and throughout the food system. Our Agri-Tech Centre, based on our award-winning commercial farm, is fast becoming a hub for innovation in this exciting area. This trailblazing, industry-facing facility provides current and future generation farmers access the latest available agri-technologies, helping us meet the challenge of sustainably and responsibly feeding a growing global population. Sustainability A unique complex of purpose-built facilities, the centre is an interface for innovation. Students and staff collaborate with Gloucestershire’s farmers and agri-businesses to drive forward new agricultural strategies and activities that will protect and preserve environmental integrity in farming. Our farmland is also helping shape the future of crop and grassland research.
Digital technology By applying the latest technology and analytical techniques to data science, students make use of technology to inform decision making into areas such as animal and land monitoring. Reducing the global carbon footprint of dairy cows Professor Matt Bell, Director of Agriculture has developed a pioneering breeding index that identifies dairy cows based on crucial sustainability traits including milk production, health, fertility, and lifespan. Known as the Hartpury Herd Index, this industry-ready system can be easily applied and replicated for any dairy herd. The index enables farmers to selectively breed cows that perfectly match their specific farm conditions, but also have lower carbon emissions to substantially reduce the carbon footprint of the dairy industry.
“Hartpury is setting high standards of animal husbandry and biosecurity while playing a vital role in educating the next generation of farmers.” Neil Adams Managing Director, Promar
