At Hartpury, we believe that everyone should be provided with the chance to experience university life so that they can understand exactlywhat is on offer in higher education. The main focus for the team in outreach is to ensure we inspire, motivate and empower young people. This will help themmake the right decision to suit their individual ‘wants, needs and aspirations’ and ultimately reach their full potential.
We aim to provide a wide range of important initiatives such as subject taster days, student life talks, presentations, and subject masterclasses. We are an enthusiastic team supported by highly qualified lecturers who enjoy inspiring young minds both on campus, in schools and in the wider community.
We work closely with schools, colleges, teachers and careers advisors to ensure individuals are provided with innovative activities, designed to raise aspirations and enhance the awareness and benefits of higher education. We work hard to develop strong relationships for targeted outreach work to ensure all young people have opportunities regardless of their background.

Unlock Your Future: presentations
Introduction to Hartpury University and Hartpury College
This presentation has been designed to be given as part of assemblies or workshops and can be tailored to suit your needs. This will provide an overview of the courses available at Hartpury at college and/or university level and the different qualification types available, as well as brief information on transport, accommodation and our facilities. We also have subject focused talks on an ‘Introduction to Hartpury University’ for Agriculture, Animal, Equine and Sport.

This session will explore the A-Level, BTEC, T-level and apprenticeship courses at Hartpury College, the admissions process, facilities on campus and offer students the opportunity to ask questions to our experienced outreach team.

This presentation provides an insight into daily life at Hartpury University, using specific examples from our students. This includes looking at timetables, their experiences of being a student and providing top tips for new students. This can be combined with our ‘Life at Hartpury University’ for a more general look into life at Hartpury.

The UCAS journey This talk allows students to understand the UCAS journey, including the important timeline of deadlines across the academic year and the step-by-step process of applying for university. Access Your Future: impartial workshops
Choosing the right university
This interactive workshop will explore how to choose the right university for you and how to narrow down your options from the vast choices that are now available. This will include looking at the different degree types (BSc, FdSc, MSc etc.) and identifying your course choice, city or rural location, distance and statistics/ awards.

CVWorkshop This workshop is designed to help students create an impactful CV. Drawing on current employment and labour market information, the session outlines the purpose of a CV, appropriate content and tips for design and layout. The interactive activities allow learners to identify their own transferable skills, experience and interests – perfect for creating a great CV.
Having a healthymindset at university This interactive presentation outlines the importance of mental resilience and managing anxiety during transitional stages of the student journey, explaining where anxiety comes from and the impact it can have on everyday lives. It will also provide practical tips designed to boost mindset, confidence and help setting goals.

Extended project qualification
This interactive presentation outlines what the EPQ entails, benefits of undertaking the project and how to choose a topic. It includes real-life examples of EPQ titles, source analysis (based on OCR guidance) and step-by-step direction on where and how to carry out research for this project, using techniques that can be used for all subject areas.

Speakingwith confidence This workshop has been specifically designed to help anyone and everyone to feel better about speaking in front of an audience, no matter the size. The workshop has been developed using a number of different styles of public speaking, and the techniques are delivered to, and practised in small groups. The workshop is led by RichWhincup, Hartpury lecturer and inspirational speaker.
Interactive campus tours Our interactive campus tours give students the opportunity to see what Hartpury has to offer at both university and/or college level, as well as our specialist facilities. Students will benefit from opportunities to complete fun tasks to enhance their understanding of life as a university student, including fact finding, quizzes and word searches.
These tours can be combined with a workshop on campus or as part of a subject taster day.

Student finance and budgeting
Preparing for interviews
Interviews play a key role in becoming a successful candidate. Students attend formal interviews for colleges, universities, work placements and jobs. In this workshop, students will be provided with an overview of what to expect from an interview, how to prepare using a range of different techniques and what to do on the day.
Designed to introduce student finance, this workshop tackles myths associated with higher education funding, and looks at smart ways to manage money. Highlighting the importance of maths, students will have the opportunity to practise budgeting skills and learn top money saving tips.

University student finance explained This presentation provides an in-depth look at financial support packages available from the Student Loans Company and universities. This includes tuition fee loans, maintenance loans, bursaries and scholarships. It also covers the application process, repayment process and eligible criteria.
Writing a personal statement
A step-by-step guide on topics to discuss, the order of their content and how students can highlight their qualifications, skills and experience. It also covers how students identify their key attributes and how to utilise work experience and extracurricular activity to support a higher education application.

This interactive presentation outlines the benefits of attending university, looks at what careers students think Higher Education (HE) courses could lead to, debunks some common myths students may have surrounding university and covers common student finance queries. The workshop includes a workbook for students own personal development and ends with a fun quiz.

Explore Your Future: subject workshops As well as our core outreach activities, we offer subject specific workshops to ignite passions in young people. It’s never too early for students to start thinking about their future. With Hartpury’s global reputation in agriculture, animal, equine, sport and veterinary nursing, they can experience learning from some of the very best academics. All of our workshops can be carried out at our 360-hectare Gloucestershire campus using a wide selection of our outstanding facilities, while some workshops can be offered off site at schools or colleges. The workshops last anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes, meaning they can be completed in school lesson times.
Equipment required: The session will take place at Home Farm and requires Wellington/ walking boots, gloves and a coat. Year groups: How do they work and why do we use them? This workshop introduces the different types of technology being used and developed to help farmers become more productive, efficient and sustainable. What technologies are or could be used in food production?

Year groups: What animals will you breed on your farm? Howwill you breed them and why? This workshop illustrates the process of selective breeding, a tool that farmers use to produce the best livestock for their farms. This workshop will utilise Hartpury’s outstanding commercial farm facilities. Agriculture - Selective breeding game
Agriculture career pathwayworkshop
This interactive workshop focuses on the agriculture sector providing students with key industry statistics, specific career profiles and will highlight the current skills shortages in this expanding industry. This one-hour workshop will explore how to get a career in the agriculture sector and the different higher education qualifications available including postgraduate options, as well as brief information on competitive graduate schemes, studying abroad and exciting placement opportunities.

Equipment required: When on site, Wellington boots or walking boots will be required. Students are advised to bring along suitable clothing for the time of year. Year groups: A farmer has to be able to calculate feed intake for their animals and make sure the right balance of forage and concentrated feed is achieved to keep animals healthy and in production. This will test maths skills and students will be able to relate feed balance to themselves as well. Getting the right balance between key feed groups is crucial within livestock production. Agriculture - Grass, nature’s larder
Equipment required: When on site, Wellington boots or walking boots will be required. Students are advised to bring along suitable clothing for the time of year. Year groups: This workshop is based on the topic of grass and its amazing properties. In groups, students will carry out plate metering to determine the amount of grass in a set area (which they will measure as well) and then calculate how many cows or sheep they can graze for 24 hours on that area. This workshop can be done anywhere where there is grass.

Year groups: Animal - Owl Pellets Hosted in Hartpury’s laboratories, students will be guided through a dissection of an owl pellet, after which they will dissect their own pellet in order to find and identify a variety of rodent species present in the pellet.

Animal - First aid An awareness of animal first aid is essential when working in the animal industry. In this workshop, you will start to learn the basics of animal first aid with an interactive session on appropriate techniques for wound management and the application of various bandaging methods on companion animals.
Animal - Using technology inwildlife conservation Conservationists are using more and more technology to understand the natural world. Knowing about and using these technologies is key for a career in conservation. In this session students will be introduced to different technologies such as radio-tracking, thermal imaging and camera trapping, as well as how they can use their own technology to engage in conservation. Equipment required: Students are welcome and encouraged to use their own mobile phones in this session, however technology can be provided as an alternative. Year groups:

This dissection workshop gives students an opportunity to look at one of the anatomical structures that makes the horse such an incredible athlete. Equine – Rider performance centre
Students will get the opportunity to test our world class equine performance laboratory equipment in our Margaret Giffen Centre for Rider Performance. Assessing balance, centre, and reins tension, students will get an in depth look at their riding technique. Please note, this workshop is limited to 10 students due to capacity limitations.
This workshop is only available to small groups due to limited space and facilities.

Equine - Maintaining healthy equine diets
Equine - The theory of equine evolution
Equine obesity is a contemporary issue that owners and industry practitioners are working together to tackle. This workshop will encourage students to think like an equine nutritionist, learning howwe can monitor the horse’s weight and condition, and design feeding regimes based on individual requirements.
The first known ancestor of the modern-day horse existed around 56 million years ago, but a lot has changed since then. This workshop looks at how the horse has evolved and adapted throughout the years to survive and thrive in today’s world.

Sport Career Pathway Workshop
Sport – Coaching session Hosted in our £10 million sport academy, working in teams’ students will use the kit provided to create a coaching session around a sport of their choosing, they will then deliver their session back to their peers who will complete and feedback on it. This workshop improves student’s teamwork, presentation and coaching skills.
This engaging workshop focuses on the sport sector where it will provide students with key industry statistics, specific career profiles and highlights the desirable skills required to work in this competitive industry. This one hour workshop will explore how to get a career in the sport sector and the different higher education qualifications available, as well as brief information on popular graduate schemes, studying abroad and exciting placement opportunities.

Sport - Rugby kicking This workshop covers all elements of kicking, from punting to place kicking. The workshop will begin with tuition and technique-based content so that students can gain more in-depth knowledge and understanding of kicking, finishing with a game-based activity.
Equipment required: This is a lecture style session and as such, no specific equipment is required. Year groups: The sporting industry in the UK is worth a staggering £20 billion per year (2020) and provides over 450,000 jobs. This workshop outlines what sports business management at university is really like, covering topics such sponsorship, finance and marketing and the power of sport. Sport - Theworld of Sports Business
Equipment required: Outdoor kit such as shorts and t-shirt and preferably football boots with studs. If you do not have football boots, wear trainers. Year groups:

Students will spend half the day learning about what biomechanics is in sport, and why it is important for athletes to understand this. They will then put theory into practice using the technology within our biomechanics laboratory.
