You don't have to be able to ride to study one of our equine courses, however, you will need some practical experience of horse care and handling. You'll have opportunities to get involved with fun equestrian activities alongside your lectures, if you want to.* From our student-led Equestrian Club to volunteering in our Equine Therapy Centre or at local, national, or international events, there's much more to horses at Hartpury than just riding.

Riding at Hartpury

Improving your riding For those of you with your own horse, you can engage in lessons, clinics, and on-site competitions. If you're an established rider without your own horse, you could have riding lessons on one of our 50 Hartpury horses during term time.** There are also plenty of riding options locally, catering for beginners to advanced riders. Equestrian Club Take advantage of recreational riding and social events through our student-run Equestrian Club.** It’s a great place to meet like-minded friends outside of your classroom lectures. We also offer other equine groups, including the Polo Society for new and experienced players alike. Find out about subsidised lessons and Equestrian Club activities when you arrive.

Riding competition If you’re a competition rider with your own horse, you may be eligible to join our Equine Academy. You’ll have access to world-class coaches, specialist training support, and unrivalled facilities to help you reach your peak for competition. This includes a Rider Performance Centre, equipped with a gym, sports therapy suite, and Racewood eventing and racing simulators – the most advanced in an educational institution.

*Dependent on horse availably and academic timetabling. **Riding is subject to an assessment. If you're not at the required level via the Equestrian Club you could book subsidised lessons with a local riding school, or we can help you find independent training. You'll need to organise your own transport. Additional cost applies for riding.
