Welcome to Hartpury

We’re very much looking forward to welcoming you into our Hartpury family in September. You no doubt have lots of questions about joining us. What happens during your Welcome and Freshers’ Week? When will you move into your accommodation? And, arguably most importantly, howwill your course be delivered during Covid-19? Our teams are busy refining and implementing plans. At the heart of every decision we make is the quality of your academic and overall student experience. We’re continuing to consult with our current students and Students’ Union throughout, incorporating suggestions and preferences to ensure your student experience remains the best it can be. Over the next few pages, you’ll find lots of essential guidance about preparing for and completing your enrolment. We’ll keep you updated with specific information as plans progress, in line with Government guidance. If you’re moving into Hartpury accommodation on campus, this is when you’ll collect your room keys and start settling in with your new housemates. Turn to page 11 to find out everything you need to know. You’ll have a designated move-in time slot on Saturday 19 or Sunday 20

Your Welcome Week is your first week at Hartpury. You’ll meet your Programme Manager and course mates as you take part in subject sessions. These will include practical activities, so it’s important that you bring your kit and equipment with you. Read more on page 9. We’ll send yourWelcomeWeek timetable via email soon.

Your Enrolment This is an important part of your Welcome Week. Here’s what will happen: 1. Classroom session – first you’ll complete the online section of your enrolment with your Programme Manager. Please make sure you bring your laptop with you. Don’t have a laptop? You could be eligible for a Hardship Bursay of up to £1,000 to help with the cost www.hartpury.ac.uk/ug-finance You may need to fill in some extra finance forms. If you haven’t applied for a student loan, haven’t had your loan approved, or you’re an international student, it’s important that you fill in your FD1 Form and Direct Debit Mandate. Visit your offer-holder hub at www.hartpury.ac.uk/enrolment to download your forms. Please bring the completed copies to your enrolment Don’t forget to buy your parking permit, gym and sports academy membership prior to enrolment. Visit our online store: estore.hartpury.ac.uk Monday 21 September – Sunday 4 October 2020 Your Freshers’ Week Freshers’ Week runs at the same time as Welcome Week and includes lots of social activities to help you settle in and make friends. We’ll be running it over two weeks instead of one this year. Your first week will be packed full of fun physical and virtual events, while your second week will include some chilled activities to help you relax after your first lectures. Find out more on page 7. Monday 28 September 2020 Get your student loan Providing you enrol before Friday 25 September, you’ll get your student loan on Monday 28 September. If you enrol after this date, your loan will be released as soon as possible after 28 September. Enrolling during Covid-19 We’re ensuring our protocols are regularly updated in line with the latest Government guidance. Our estates team are continuing to install safety and wellbeing measures across the whole of our rural 360-hectare campus. We’re currently working hard on detailed plans for your enrolment and academic experience. You’ll receive your full Welcome Week and Freshers’ timetable in September. You should be receiving regular email updates about our latest plans. You can also find the most up-to-date information on our Covid-19 FAQs page. www.hartpury.ac.uk/cv19 When you arrive on campus, you’ll have plenty of guidance to help you to remain hygienic and social distanced. We’ll also provide necessary safety equipment and clear instructions in key places about our protocols. You’ll discover out more about this soon. 2. Enrolment hall – get your photo taken for your Hartpury student ID.

Your student experience

We’re committed to ensuring that the quality of your academic and overall student experience is at the heart of all of our planning. We’ve been consulting with our current students and Students’ Union throughout our decision making and incorporating their suggestions into plans. This is what your term could look like, with social distancing and sanitising protocols in place, in line with the latest Government guidance.

Teaching experience You’ll still receive a minimum of 15 hours* of timetabled teaching each week in your first year via a mix of learning activities. This is significantly higher than the national average. Practical sessions Our 360-hectare rural campus provides lots of opportunities for learning in small groups outside, so you’ll still be applying theory to practice in practical sessions to strengthen your learning. Face-to-face seminars We pride ourselves on delivering a personalised student experience. We’ll deliver as much face-to-face learning as possible, including smaller group seminars, tutorials and classroom sessions.

Supporting you

Our support services will help you to make the most of your time at Hartpury and be the best you can be. Alongside your personal tutor and lecturers, you’ll have access to academic and career guidance, as well as support with your personal development and wellbeing. Achievement and Success Centre (ASC) Our Achievement and Success Centre will help you to develop your academic and personal skills through workshops and resources on heaps of topics, including academic writing, presentation skills, resilience, data and research, and more. Innovation, Careers and Enterprise (ICE) With 1:2:1 careers planning sessions, we can help you to achieve your goals. From CV writing, interview coaching and work placement support, to setting up your own business, there are plenty of opportunities to enhance your professional portfolio with our business experts. Wellbeing Centre Our friendly student wellbeing team includes nurses, counsellors, wellbeing officers and a chaplain. They’re here to provide advice on everything to do with your health and happiness, and can refer you to support services in the local area. Drop in for a chat – it’s all completely confidential. Student Services Student Services is your one-stop shop for everything you need. Located in the Student Zone, this is where you’ll pick up your post (make sure you have your student ID on you), send letters and parcels, and buy the essentials, from toothpaste to stamps.

Wednesdays are dedicated to your wellbeing. From walking to yoga, we run a range of mood-boosting activities to help you to relax and stay positive.

Your Freshers’ Week

Freshers’ Week is an important part ofyour university experience. Despite everything that’s going onwith Covid-19, we’re going tomake sureyou have plentyof opportunities to make newfriends and settle intoHartpury life. This year, we’ll be running Freshers’ Week over two weeks, instead of one. Your first week will be packed full of fun physical and virtual events. We’re planning everything from a pub crawl (on campus or in Gloucester) and open air cinema, to trips to Bristol and Cheltenham, a virtual escape room and online cocktail making. Your second week will include some chilled activities, to help you relax after your first course sessions. We’ll be in touch with more details as our plans start to take shape. Clubs and societies Whether you want to carry on doing something you love or try something different, joining a club is a great way to meet people and have new experiences outside of your course.

Getting your kit, equipment and books You’ll spend a lot of your time getting hands-on in practical sessions, developing your specialist skills. To keep you safe as you learn, you’ll need to get some essential kit and equipment. You can also start familiarising yourself with the key themes in your subject by doing some summer reading. You’ll be ready to dive into your degree in September. Make sure you buy this in advance and bring it to your Welcome Week. You’ll need it to take part in some of your practical activities. While it doesn’t need to be Hartpury-branded, you might like to buy your kit from our website. We work with trusted suppliers to ensure the highest quality. Get connected

FromWiFi access to IT packages and technical support, here’s everything you need to know about staying connected at Hartpury. Stay connected You’ll have access to WiFi everywhere on campus; including the library, study areas, your accommodation and classrooms. EduroamWiFi – This is what you’ll use on campus. On your enrolment day, we’ll set you up with WiFi access through your student account. Guest access – If you need to access the WiFi before you’re set up, you can connect to ‘_The Cloud’ WiFi on campus as a guest. Once you’ve connected, you’ll need to go to a webpage on your browser and create an account or log into an existing one. Don’t forget to switch over to EduroamWiFi when you’re all set up with your student account. Your on-campus accommodation – You’ll have a wired network point for internet access in your room. If you need to get an Ethernet cable, pop into Student Services. IT packages As a Hartpury student, you’ll have access to the following services for free: - Microsoft Office 365 subscription on your laptop - SPSS statistical programme (used for dissertations and research projects) - Use of all computers on campus Need help? Accommodation FAQs What should I pack?

Find your packing lists (and what not to bring!) on your offer-holder hub and start getting prepared. This includes student essentials, as well as useful things for the household. Visit www.hartpury.ac.uk/enrolment Where can I parkwhen I arrive? If you’re moving in on campus, you’ll park in the main car park. Here you’ll be able to unload your things and move into your new room. If you’re moving into Blackfriars halls off campus, there’s a pay and display car park opposite the building. Cityheart, who manage the accommodation, will be in touch with all the details you need soon. Where can I domywashing? You’ll have access to the laundrette on campus, which is located next to accommodation block Limbury 12. You’ll need to buy a laundry card from the laundrette to do your washing. If you’re moving into Blackfriars there will be laundry facilities in the building. Where can I eat? There are so many options on campus, you’ll never go hungry! Graze restaurant serves hot and cold food, while Red & Black café and Legends bar sell snacks and Costa coffee. There’s a café at our equine centre and a snack truck at the farm too, so you can grab a bite on the go. If you’re living off site in Blackfriars halls, you’ll have plenty of cafés, shops, restaurants and eateries to choose from in nearby Gloucester Quays. Can I order ameal package? Yes. We offer a meal package for when things get busy. They include five meals a week, to be taken at lunch or dinner, Monday – Sunday, to fit around your schedule.
