Increasing our yield as we reduce our impact on the planet through scientific research

We're focused on increasing productivity, with less resource, to feed a growing human population. Here are a few of the latest research projects our students and staff have been working on. Crop yield could increase through magnesium reduction in soil. We’ve found a way to reduce magnesium levels in the soil and increase yield. An undergraduate student research project has discovered that calcium sulphate can reduce harmful magnesium – which locks up other important nutrients in the soil and stunts plant growth. Organic seaweed fertiliser boosts radish growth. An undergraduate student project has found that an organic plant- based bio stimulant can be used to increase the weight and length of a radish crop, as well as the yield. These findings could be applied by food producers across the country. Pig welfare and production improved with water supplement. We revealed that water-cleaning supplements in pigs’ drinking water can increase average weight gain by reducing disease. Pigs reached their target weight sooner. If implemented by pig producers, this could reduce production costs while improving profit margins. Interaction with animals could have a positive impact on the mental wellbeing of livestock farmers. We have been looking into the impact of the farmer-animal bond on mental health. Early findings show that even simple, daily interactions with animals can help to increase livestock farmers’ wellbeing.

Our students are focused on the big question: How do we sustainably feed a growing world population, set to hit 9.7 billion by 2050? Part of an internationally- recognised research community, they’re having a direct impact on the way farmers across the world grow our food. From increasing the yield of crops through soil quality, to improving productivity in livestock through water supplements, it all adds up to make a big difference. Impact-driven Research

With access to our 360-hectare commercial Home Farm, our students are able to explore their own research interests through their undergraduate dissertations. They also team up with our industry-active lecturers to work on live briefs and research trials for agricultural businesses.
