If you want to save for that special item or holiday, open a savings account. Have a look online for the one that is aimed specifically at students or offers the most benefits. When you are out shopping, for food for example, look for the bargains – is it cheaper to buy in bulk (as long as it doesn’t have a short shelf life). Most supermarkets have club cards which are worth getting. Do you have a job alongside your studies? Make sure you aren’t overpaying on tax. Students are taxed the same as anyone else so if you earn less than £11,500 a year then you shouldn’t pay any tax. Look for student discount sites such as UNiDAYS – all you need is an active ac.uk email address to get started. Apply for an TOTUM student card for masses of discounts. There’s an annual fee of £14.99 (£24.99 for three years) for the card or you can get a digital one for free. You might have some books that you need to read as part of your course. Don’t buy them new – you can rent, borrow or buy second-hand instead. Check out Hartpury’s ULC and CLC for the books you might need – our friendly staff will be on hand to help you. You may be entitled to grants and bursaries. You will need to speak to our Finance team about what help you can expect help with.
