Equine research that makes a difference

Pushing performance We know that happy, healthy horses tend to perform at their best. Our research is maximising industry welfare standards for successful horse-rider partnerships at all levels of equestrian sport. For example, in the world of dressage, a ‘surprise’ discovery about elite riders’ pelvis technique will influence future training for riders at all levels. Changing lives Our relationship with horses goes much deeper than winning competitions. We’ve been exploring how regular interactions with horses can improve the wellbeing and positivity of young people with autism. Our findings could have a big impact on the future provision of equine-assisted therapy.

Our staff and students have access to world-leading facilities. They carry out research that’s changing the waywe train and work with horses, maximising welfare as well as performance. We’re the voice of authority on equine treadmill use for rehabilitation and our studies into dressage technique and the benefit of sleep are advancing industry standards. We continually review our own approach, in line with current research, to put the wellbeing of our horses first. Advancingwelfare Welfare is at the heart of everything we do. We're leading best practice in the use of water treadmills for training and rehabilitation. Our Equine Therapy Centre research team has contributed to the world's first international guidelines, which draw on 20 years of applied research in equine rehabilitation.

Our research into the benefits of equine-assisted therapy was carried out with Sirona Therapeutic Horsemanship.
