FLEXIBLE PATHWAYS
Studying a postgraduate qualification at Hartpury gives you the chance to develop your expertise in a topic that truly inspires you, then use that expertise to create a successful and meaningful career. From developing new professional skills to making a difference through ground-breaking research, whatever it is that has brought you this far, we can offer you a flexible pathway that takes you to your next destination. There are two main categories for postgraduate study: taught master’s and research degrees. You can study full-time or combine study with other commitments via a part-time course.
shorter courses give you a recognised qualification as well as the flexibility to progress to the next level on successful completion; you can work your way towards a full master’s degree. Doctoral degrees This is the highest level of study. As a research degree student, you’ll study for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification. A PhD can be undertaken on successful completion of a master's degree or (exceptionally) immediately following your undergraduate degree. As a PhD student, you'll produce a significant body of original research of the highest quality that adds new knowledge and understanding to the field of study. The main component of the degree is a doctoral thesis, which must be worthy of publication. Doctorates are generally completed over three to four years full-time, or five to six years part-time. Our research degrees are conducted in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE), which means our PhD students belong to two important research communities.
Qualifications explained Master's degrees Full and part-time options; flexible delivery to fit around commitments A master’s degree involves both theoretical and practical learning to ensure you develop both knowledge and skills for employment. You'll be taught by a team of experts, applying theory to practice on campus or as part of a professional role alongside your studies. • Master of Science (MSc): a one, two or three-year degree, offering compulsory and optional modules, alongside a research-focused dissertation. Master of Research (MRes): usually one year full-time, these taught awards develop your research knowledge and skills in your chosen subject or field. Master of Business Administration (Top-Up): studied over one year this programme is aimed at those with (120) master’s credits, or equivalent, in a related subject area to achieve the MBA award. Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip): usually one-year qualifications, forming part of the full MSc or MRes degrees. These • • •

STORIES PHD
Fiona Bloom PhD: Equine gait-related eliminations in British endurance: Identifying the risk factors to improve horse welfare Hartpury was the obvious choice. I purposefully sought out my amazing supervisor Dr Jane Williams for her epidemiological background and interest within the sport. I can honestly say I struck gold with all my supervisors − their expertise, advice and encouragement throughout was second to none." "My research looks at risk factors for lameness within National Level endurance competitions. The world is watching the equestrian industry to ensure that riders, competitors, owners and all stakeholders are holding animal welfare at the forefront of their decision-making. I hope my findings will support and educate stakeholders within the sport to optimise the welfare of their horses and this will lead to competitive success.
"Zoo research has made a huge contribution to our knowledge of animal welfare needs and continually improves the lives of captive animals. This is really important, but it’s changes in human behaviour that will have a lasting impact on conservation. My experience working at Bristol Zoo made me realise that we need to understand more about how engaging with visitors can contribute to the broader conservation mission of zoos. I want to help zoos to better shape people’s views and behaviours to help improve wildlife protection. Hartpury’s expertise in zoo research made it the obvious choice."
Polly Doodson PhD: Zoo conservation communication student

"I’m helping student athletes perform at their best on the sports field, and in the classroom, by altering sleep patterns and working to improve sleep outcomes. Sleep is considered a key pillar of health and performance but is something that student athletes often struggle with. My research examines their sleep-related behaviours to develop a package to facilitate better sleep behaviours and endorse optimal sleep hygiene practices. Hartpury’s world-class facilities and top-level Sports Academy team make it the perfect place to conduct cutting-edge sport research that will have an impact on athlete wellbeing and performance."
"I’m passionate about driving change in agriculture in three critical areas: consumer education, farmer wellbeing and animal welfare. From my undergraduate experience, I knew Hartpury would treat me as an individual and that I would be supported to mould my research to complement my own experiences and values. I’m exploring how the level of connection between farmers and consumers influences dairy cow welfare and farmer wellbeing within different selling routes. Findings may evidence benefits associated with alternative routes, such as farm shops, showing that strong farmer-consumer relationships enhance wellbeing for farmers, consumers and animals."

Data is transforming agriculture and has become the source of truth for performance, productivity, and sustainability measures on-farm and throughout the food system. Our Agri-Tech Centre, based on our award-winning commercial farm, is fast becoming a hub for innovation in this exciting area. This trailblazing, industry-facing facility provides current and future generation farmers access the latest available agri-technologies, helping us meet the challenge of sustainably and responsibly feeding a growing global population. Sustainability A unique complex of purpose-built facilities, the centre is an interface for innovation. Students and staff collaborate with Gloucestershire’s farmers and agri-businesses to drive forward new agricultural strategies and activities that will protect and preserve environmental integrity in farming. Our farmland is also helping shape the future of crop and grassland research.
Digital technology By applying the latest technology and analytical techniques to data science, students make use of technology to inform decision making into areas such as animal and land monitoring. Reducing the global carbon footprint of dairy cows Professor Matt Bell, Director of Agriculture has developed a pioneering breeding index that identifies dairy cows based on crucial sustainability traits including milk production, health, fertility, and lifespan. Known as the Hartpury Herd Index, this industry-ready system can be easily applied and replicated for any dairy herd. The index enables farmers to selectively breed cows that perfectly match their specific farm conditions, but also have lower carbon emissions to substantially reduce the carbon footprint of the dairy industry.
“Hartpury is setting high standards of animal husbandry and biosecurity while playing a vital role in educating the next generation of farmers.” Neil Adams Managing Director, Promar

THE FUTURE At Hartpury, we focus on how we can use our skills today to shape the future positively,
Exploring injury and canine biomechanics To understand current rates of injury within the sport, BFA members were surveyed resulting in the collection of performance and injury data from over 500 dogs. The project also undertook biomechanical analysis of competitors during the box-turn (where dogs turn on an angled surface while catching a ball), using state of the art 3D motion capture technology to provide data on canine movement in addition to data on the forces the limbs experience. This data provides a unique insight in the potential for injury within the sport, which will enable governing bodies to generate recommendations for competitor safety in the future.
particularly in improving the safety and wellbeing of animals. For example, we’re currently collaborating with the British Flyball Association (BFA) to investigate both the occurrence and origins of injuries within the sport. Canine flyball is a fantastic sport for both spectators and competitors. It is fast, frenetic, and hugely entertaining and as such it continues to grow in popularity across the world. Hartpury are leading the way as to date, limited research has been conducted on flyball dogs to understand the injury risks for participants and to assess the overall safety of
the sport for canine competitors. Enhancing safety and welfare

INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS
"I’m a magistrate, run a small holding and have horses to ride, so time is precious. This fully online course offered a great deal of flexibility that fitted my lifestyle. I know that some online courses make you feel invisible, but I never felt that. The team went above and beyond. It’s fair to say that without studying the course at Hartpury I wouldn’t have the qualifications, my role advocating animal welfare, and the connections I have now."

TRANSFORMING THE BEHAVIOUR OF PET OWNERS
“Through my work at Woodgreen Pets Charity, I’m constantly asking how we can make the world better for pets. Although I work in the pet welfare sector, I find that the key lies in people – both present and future pet guardians. Supported by Hartpury, this has led me to pursue a PhD that explores how we can use psychological modelling to understand and change the behaviour of pet owners. My aim for the future is to implement these insights into actionable interventions, empowering organisations like Woodgreen to enhance the wellbeing of pets through positive shifts in pet owner behaviour."
