DOING IT

DIFFERENTLY We focus on howwe can use our skills today to influence tomorrow, protecting

hedgehogs may soon be out of harm’s way. Lucy and her team of students and industry partners are working with Henry, a rescue ‘detection dog' trained by Conservation K9 Consultancy, to sniff out hedgehogs before development projects begin. Once detected, their habitat can be protected or the hedgehogs can be moved to safety before its cleared. Resetting the natural world The results from trials have been astounding. Henry, whose sense of smell is 100,000 times more sensitive than a human's, has been exceptional at locating nesting hedgehogs swiftly without disturbing them. Media and public interest has resulted in Lucy and her team featuring in national and local media including the BBC’s The One Show. The team is now progressing further studies to develop this safe and sustainable method to help protect this much-loved British creature.

UKwildlife through rewilding and encouraging biodiversity in linewith natural dynamics. For example, we're finding new innovativeways to prevent hedgehog populations fromdeclining as a result of increasing urbanisation in the modernworld, and are proud that our research in this area has been recognised in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework as 'world leading' and 'internationally excellent'. Identifying prickly problems Despite being voted Britain’s favourite mammal by the Royal Society of Biology (2020), hedgehog numbers in Britain are in decline, with a 50% drop in the past decade alone due to loss of habitat from urban development. As hedgehogs spend about 85% of their lifetimes nesting in dense undergrowth and long grass, they’re in danger whenever land is cleared. Thinking differently Thanks to Hartpury’s resident hedgehog expert, Dr Lucy Bearman-Brown, these

GLOBAL IMPACT CREATING

We co-produced theworld’sfirst ever equine hydrotherapyguidelines, EquineWaterTreadmill Exercise: A Guide for Users , which are informing the training of hundreds of sport horses and racehorsesworldwide. Our facilities, academic experts and industry networks enable us to improve equine performance, health andwellbeing on a global scale. Identifying the challenge Water treadmills are increasingly used within sports horse management to maintain musculoskeletal health and improve performance. However, an international survey - supported by the British Equestrian Federation's World Class Programme, which was funded by UK Sport Lottery - revealed that staff in many commercial venues had no formal training, highlighting the potential for poor practice. This emphasised an urgent need to develop a set of industry standards to ensure the safety of horses on water treadmills and enable practitioners to achieve the right kind of outcomes.

Drawing on diverse expertise The HydrotherapyWorking Group was formed: a team of academic researchers at Hartpury, led by Hartpury's Associate Professor Dr Kathryn Nankervis, university academics, hydrotherapy centres, veterinary surgeons and physiotherapists from the UK, Europe, USA and China. Our extensive facilities formed the base for the important research; by asking the right questions and drawing on the right experts, the world’s first set of equine water treadmill guidelines were produced. Influencing the highest levels The guidelines have been endorsed by British Equestrian, informing the use of water treadmills for horses on the British Equestrian World Class Programme, as well as international governing bodies for therapists and equestrian sports in the UK and across the world. The protocols now inform the effective training of hundreds of sport horses worldwide on a daily basis in a safe way that achieves powerful results.

IMPROVING

YOUNG LIVES We focus on a range of issues within sport and exercise sciences including performance and community sport, as well as the important area of public health. In fact, the relationship between physical activity and

wellbeing. Recognised by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework as 'world-leading' and 'internationally excellent' our Clem Burk Drumming Project (CBDP) is changing this, unveiling exciting new evidence that reveals the potential for drumming as a therapeutic activity to enhance physical capability, health and wellbeing. Reshaping brain structure Monitoring brain changes, motor skills and wellbeing of young people with ASD revealed that drumming changes the function of the brain. Benefits include improvements in motor skills for daily living, such as brushing teeth and using cutlery, as well as a reduction in often disruptive behavioural problems. Achieving lasting impact The results have been widespread, inspiring the launch of a number of school-funded drumming projects in both special and mainstream schools across Gloucestershire, as well as the adoption of further drumming interventions in community groups across England. We’re planning further studies to add to this important evidence base.

wellbeing is one of the spaces within which we’re uncovering valuable new insights to help improve lives. We’ve recently discovered that the physical and mental activity involved in drumming can reshape the structure of the brain in young people with autism to improve their movement and behavioural control. This revelation could well have a positive impact on the lives of those with a range of neurological conditions. Exploring the physical, mental and health benefits of drumming Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can cause challenges with both movement and behaviour. Drug-based therapies create undesirable side effects, however, despite this, there are a lack of practical, cost effective therapies to support individual’s

Canine performance and training Our specialism includes different aspects of the field and involves prestigious partners including the Kennel Club’s GB Agility team. From biomechanics and nutrition to canine health and welfare, you could get involved in a range range of canine activities. Conservation Our rural estate is a haven for wildlife and is at the heart of much of our learning and research. FLEXIBLE PATHWAYS

Studying a postgraduate qualification at Hartpury gives you the chance to develop your expertise in a topic that truly inspires you, then use that expertise to create a successful and meaningful career. From developing new professional skills to making a difference through ground-breaking research, whatever it is that has brought you this far, we can offer you a flexible pathway that takes you to your next destination. There are two main categories for postgraduate study: taught master’s and research degrees. You can study full-time or combine study with other commitments via a part-time course.

Doctoral degrees As a research degree student, you’ll study for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification. A PhD can be undertaken on successful completion of a master’s degree or directly from your undergraduate degree. A PhD degree involves a significant research project on a specialist topic that adds new knowledge or understanding to a field of study. The main component of the degree is a doctoral thesis, which must be worthy of publication. Doctorates are generally completed over three to four years full-time, or six to eight years part-time. Our research degrees are conducted in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE), which means our PhD students belong to two important research communities. See pages 11 - 12 for more on research degrees.

Qualifications explained Master's degrees Full and part-time options; flexible delivery to fit around commitments A master’s degree involves both theoretical and practical learning to ensure you develop both knowledge and skills for employment. You'll be taught by a team of experts, applying theory to practice on campus or as part of a professional role alongside your studies. • Master of Science (MSc): a one, two or three-year degree, offering compulsory and optional modules, alongside a research-focused dissertation. Master of Research (MRes): a one, two or three-year degree, offering compulsory and optional modules focused on a significant piece of independent research. Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip): usually one-year qualifications, forming part of the full MSc or MRes degrees. These shorter courses give you a recognised qualification as well as the flexibility to progress to the next level on successful completion; you can work your way towards a full master’s degree. • •

Most of our courses are delivered via a mix of campus and online sessions, as well as in blocks across weekends . This ensures our students can fit their studies alongside other commitments.

The bigger picture Our projects give our postgraduate students the chance to participate in wider conversations through research conducted by MRes and PhD students, as well as staff. You’ll have opportunities to get involved in these projects as part of modules, your dissertation, as well as our communities of practice (see page 83), joining a rich and varied network that’s changing our perception of animals and the agricultural world.
