Tuition fees, living costs and loans

We know there’s a lot to take in around your finances. From tuition fees to living costs and loans, it can all seem a bit confusing. That’s why we’ve put this section together, to help you understand what’s what. English students There are two types of loans available to English students, provided by the government through Student Finance England. Tuition fee loan – lets you borrow enough money to pay your tuition fees in full. Maintenance loan – this is means tested (dependent on your household income) and allows you to borrow money to support your living costs at university. www.gov.uk/student-finance Welsh students There are loans and bursaries available to Welsh students, provided by the government through Student Finance Wales. Tuition fee loan – lets you borrow enough money to pay your tuition fees in full. Maintenance loan – this is means tested (dependent on your household income) and allows you to borrow money to support your living costs at university. Maintenance grant – you may be eligible to receive some of your maintenance in the form of a Welsh Government Learning Grant (WGLG). This does not need to be paid back. www.studentfinancewales.co.uk European Union (EU) and international students Students from the European Union (EU) may be eligible for a tuition fee loan. This lets you borrow enough money to pay your tuition fees in full. If you’re an international student, there may be financial packages available via organisations in your own country. Hartpury University is eligible to certify Federal Direct Loan applications (FAFSA) for students from the USA and we are also recognised as an international provider by private loans company, Sallie Mae. For our Canadian students, we are also recognised by the Ontario Student Aid Program (OSAP) and eligible students can apply under PVFW.

At a glance Loans do need to be paid back Grants, bursaries and scholarships do not need to be paid back

Student finance and Brexit We understand that you may have concerns about studying in the UK, as we leave the European Union. We’re committed to supporting all students through the process and our admissions team will provide as much information as they can to help you make a decision that’s right for you. The UK Government announced in May 2019 that students from the EU starting a higher education course in England in 2020/21 academic years will be eligible for Home (UK) fee status and subsequently student finance (including tuition fee loans) in the same way as they are now. This entitlement will remain in place for the duration of the course. Read the most up-to-date information here: www.gov.uk www.britishcouncil.org

Paying back your loans You do not start repayments on your student loans until you are earning over £26,575 a year. For example, if you earn £28,000 per year, this would mean you would pay back just £10 per month. These repayments are made automatically through the tax system. More information can be found at www.gov.uk

Earn while you learn

There are a number of opportunities for you to earn some extra cash while you’re studying at Hartpury. These include being a student ambassador, making the most of an integrated placement year and getting a part-time job. There’s plenty on offer – we’ve popped a few recommendations below. Student ambassador We have a great team of over 80 student ambassadors who represent Hartpury at different events. As a student ambassador, you’ll be paid per hour on a casual contract, which means you can work the hours that suit you. You’ll need to be interviewed for the role, but providing you get the job, you’ll receive training and support to build your skills and experience. Integrated placement year Some of our courses have the option for students to take an integrated placement year. This allows you to gain invaluable work experience and skills, as well as the potential to earn some money for a year before you come back to finish your degree. Hartpury Innovation, Careers and Enterprise (ICE) As well as providing industry relevant opportunities and placements to support you with your studies, the ICE team host events such as the Big Careers Event and advertise part-time work opportunities. You could even set up your own enterprise through their Launchpad scheme while you’re with us. Part-time jobs There are a number of part-time job websites available in the Gloucestershire area, if you want to earn some money around your studies. Take a look at some of these websites:
