British Novice Championship

The British Novice Championship gives amateur riders the opportunity to compete against the stars of the sport on their best up-and-coming horses at one of the most prestigious event. The Novice Championship course runs over an intermediate course, so provides a good test and stepping stone for horses and riders alike. In similar form to the British Intermediate Championship, the winners from the Novice Championship can often been found in the runners list for the top events of this sport. Previous winners have included William Fox-Pitt’s Navigator and Cool Mountain and Clayton Fredricks’ Bendigo III who all competed at multiple 5* events later in their careers.

Restricted Novice Championship

The Novice Restricted Championship is an exciting true Novice Championship included in the British Eventing calendar. It was launched in 2015 at the Festival of British Eventing and has been incredibly popular ever since. In keeping with the grassroots nature of the Championship, riders must not have finished in the top 25% of an Intermediate class in the current or preceding five years, and not completed an Advanced class in the current or preceding 10 years. The qualifying period runs from 1 July each year to the 30 June in the following year, with the Championship taking place in the succeeding August. Horse and rider combinations must finish in the top 15 percent at any Novice, Open Novice, Intermediate Novice, CCI2*-S or CCI2*-L during this period, excluding Under 18 Novice classes and Pony Trials. Alternatively, combinations that have achieved four double clear results in the qualifying period have gained qualification for the Novice Restricted Championships.

The British Intermediate Championship attracts some of the most experienced and up-and-coming horses from around the country. Horses qualify for the championship throughout the season with successful results at Intermediate level and CCI3*-L. The Championship class runs over an Advanced-level track, one of the highest levels in eventing. Past champions have included William Fox-Pitt, Oliver Townend, Sir Mark Todd and Tina Cook to name a few. However, the real excitement of this class is watching the progression of the horses who win this class. The first winner in 1993 was Andrew Nicholson on Jagermeister II who went on to represent New Zealand at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and completed Badminton twice. Tamarillo and William Fox-Pitt won the class in 2000, who also represented Great Britain at an Olympics, alongside winning both Badminton and Burghley and many other accolades.
